29 September 2022 | Approximately 17:00
On 29 September 2022 at approximately 17:00, a historic chedi within Wat Sri Suphan in Chiang Mai partially collapsed. The structure, believed to be over 500 years old, was an important cultural and historical element of the temple grounds. Preliminary reports indicate that the collapse was likely caused by structural deterioration combined with prolonged rainfall, which allowed water to penetrate existing cracks and weaken the internal structure. No injuries were reported. Following the incident, several historical artifacts were discovered within the chedi, providing further insight into its historical significance. The temple has since restricted access to the area, while relevant authorities and conservation specialists continue to assess the site and determine appropriate restoration measures.
