Discover moments of peace and spiritual connection through traditional Lanna rituals practiced at the Silver Temple.
Rooted in centuries of Lanna tradition, the rituals at the Silver Temple offer visitors a meaningful way to connect with local beliefs, spirituality, and cultural heritage. Each practice reflects a deep relationship between community, faith, and daily life — inviting visitors not only to observe, but to participate with respect and intention.
Visitors may receive a traditional blessing from a monk, often accompanied by holy water. This ritual is believed to bring protection, clarity, and well-being.
Meaning of Receiving a Blessing, Receiving a blessing in Buddhism is not merely a ritual, but a moment of spiritual openness—welcoming the virtues of goodness, the teachings of the Buddha, and the goodwill of virtuous monks. By bowing in respect, one expresses humility, a fundamental value in the Lanna way of life. When received with mindfulness and faith, the blessing is believed to nurture inner harmony and lasting well-being.
Holy Water Blessing Ritual, consecrated through sacred chanting by the monks of Wat Sri Suphan, is regarded as imbued with compassion and spiritual purity. The ritual takes place within the Silver Ubosot, the most sacred space of the temple. During the ceremony, monks recite protective chants believed to safeguard participants from harm. The blessed water is gently sprinkled over participants as a symbolic act of purification—cleansing negativity and inviting auspiciousness, well-being, and spiritual renewal.
The Ta Laew, also known as the “Lanna Hexagram Star”, is a sacred bamboo charm used in traditional Lanna rituals. Visitors write their name and date of birth on the charm, make a wish, and hang it within the temple grounds. It is believed to ward off misfortune, protect from harm, and bring strength, balance, and well-being to one’s life. Beyond its spiritual meaning, the Ta Laew also reflects the craftsmanship and cultural identity of the local community.
The Ta Laew is one of the most distinctive cultural artifacts of the Lanna tradition, handwoven from bamboo into mesmerizing geometric patterns. Far more than mere decoration, these intricate creations serve as protective talismans deeply rooted in the spiritual beliefs of northern Thailand. At Wat Sri Suphan, visitors can discover the rich history and meaning behind these beautiful charms.
History and Origins, the Ta Laew tradition predates the arrival of Buddhism in northern Thailand, originating from animistic beliefs that permeated ancient Lanna society. Over centuries, it has been harmoniously integrated with Buddhist practice, becoming a cultural symbol found throughout temples and homes in the region.
Historically, villagers would hang Ta Laew at doorways, rice barns, and sacred spaces to guard against harm and misfortune. Wat Sri Suphan is among the few temples that still actively preserves and teaches this ancient craft.
Meaning and Symbolism represents the "watchful eye" — a symbol of spiritual vigilance and protection. Lanna people have long believed that Ta Laew can ward off evil spirits, deflect negative energies, and bring good fortune to their keepers. These patterns are not random but follow precise traditional formulas passed down through generations of Lanna artisans. The complex geometric patterns carry specific meanings:
Six-pointed star: Protection from all six directions
Square patterns: Stability of the four elements
Diamond shapes: The watchful eye itsel
Interlocking triangles: Union of heaven and earth

Visitors may place small donations on the symbolic “Kathin tree,” representing an act of generosity (dāna) in Buddhism. These offerings contribute to the annual Kathin ceremony, during which robes and essential items are presented to monks after the rainy retreat. The practice reflects the values of giving, community support, and the continuation of Buddhist traditions.
